Allison Transmission delivers Propulsion Solution for Mack CNG trucks

Indianapolis, United States- Allison Transmission., has announced that Mack Trucks, a North American manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, has chosen the Allison 4500 Rugged Duty Series (RDS) as the sole transmission currently available for its new Mack Granite model, which is powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). This collaboration is the most recent illustration of Allison's potential to provide optimized performance and capability in demanding professions, independent of the powertrain's fuel source.

The Mack Granite diesel type has been available with the 4500 RDS fully automatic transmission for more than 20 years. Mack was able to effortlessly integrate the tried-and-true 4500 RDS transmission with a 320-horsepower Cummins L9N engine when they set out to design a vehicle for garbage collection customers looking for an alternative fuel solution.

Jonathan Randall, President, Mack Trucks North America said, “The CNG Granite model is a perfect example of Mack’s ability to produce customized trucks that meet the needs of our customers. Our refuse customers asked for a CNG-powered Granite, and through our partnerships with Allison and Cummins, we delivered a solution that offers the durability, reliability and driver comfort that Mack is known for, with the added benefit of reduced emissions and noise levels.”

Rohan Barua, Vice President, North America Sales, Global Channel and Aftermarket, Allison Transmission said, “Allison transmissions, when paired with natural gas engines, have the ability to deliver up to 90% noise reduction compared to a diesel-powered vehicle. The CNG-powered Mack Granite will enable customers to optimize the productivity of their fleets, improve fuel economy, and reduce noise and emissions. We are pleased to partner with Mack on this sustainability initiative.
