Irving, Texas - Caterpillar Inc., a construction and mining equipment manufacturer, has unveiled its new High-Performance Circle (HPC) designed to significantly enhance the uptime and efficiency of its 140 JOY, 150 JOY, and 160 JOY motor graders. This advanced circle design aims to eliminate hours of monthly planned maintenance traditionally required for frequent inspections, wear strip replacements, and circle shoe adjustments associated with conventional systems.

Drawing inspiration from proven components like the Cat excavator swing drive and the 14-motor grader worm drive, the HPC features a fully sealed bearing design. This innovation replaces the older open circle and drawbar configuration, minimizing operator touchpoints, extending service intervals, and ultimately improving overall machine uptime. The smooth blade rotation enabled by the HPC also helps operators meet tight job site and road design elevation tolerances with greater precision.

A key feature of the new HPC is its compatibility with existing machine connections, fitting seamlessly in place of the standard drawbar, circle, and moldboard. Its innovative pinion gear design with a large shaft diameter ensures durable, trouble-free operation, and the drive can be removed vertically without adjustments, simplifying maintenance. Dowel locators guarantee precise motor positioning for optimal tooth contact and longer pinion life, boosting reliability and reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

The HPC design dramatically increases wear life between the circle and drawbar, while reducing the chances of excessive clearance between their surfaces. Maintenance has been made easier and quicker through a centrally located grease bank for convenient lubrication and an accessible ring gear that simplifies inspection.

In addition to lowering the total cost of ownership, the reduced maintenance demands lessen component handling, enhancing safety for service technicians. Furthermore, when the circle teeth reach their wear limit, operators can rotate them 180 degrees, effectively doubling the service life of this critical component.

Caterpillar’s High-Performance Circle boosts durability, reduces maintenance, and improves precision, increasing uptime and lowering costs for 140 JOY, 150 JOY, and 160 JOY motor graders.
