Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany - Daimler Truck AG, a commercial vehicle manufacturer, Detroit Diesel Corporation, a subsidiary of Daimler Truck North America and a leading producer of heavy-duty engines and commercial vehicle components, has unveiled its new Gen 6 engine lineup: DD13, DD15 and DD16. The next-generation portfolio is engineered to meet the EPA 2027 emissions standard and will be offered across all heavy-duty Freightliner and Western Star trucks.
Mr. David Carson, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Daimler Truck North America. said “Freightliner and Western Star customers count on Detroit for dependable, efficient, and powerful performance, and we value the trust they place in the Detroit brand and the DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines, Our Gen 6 engines build on years of proven capability and are designed to be ready for 2027 and beyond.”
Detroit’s Gen 6 engines build on the previous generation’s core architecture, preserving the durability and reliability customers expect while introducing refinements aimed at improving efficiency and helping fleets manage the impact of stricter emissions requirements.
Launched in 2007 as a clean-sheet platform to support fleets through shifting regulations, the Detroit DD series has advanced through multiple generations—Gen 2 (2010), Gen 3 (2013), Gen 4 (2016), and Gen 5 (2021)—each meeting tighter emissions rules while maintaining performance and uptime. The DD lineup has become a leading choice across the industry, with around 1.2 million heavy-duty Detroit engines sold for on-highway and vocational use across North America and other global markets.
Gen 6 is also the first product release under Daimler Truck’s latest global heavy-duty diesel engine platform (HDEP). Designed to support all brands and regions, HDEP delivers major scale—about 200,000 engines annually—strengthening Daimler Truck’s long-term competitiveness and enabling the right technology to reach the right market at the right time.
All Detroit engines are produced at the Redford, Michigan campus, which also houses Daimler Truck North America’s engine and component R&D along with transmission and axle production. The site employs 2,000+ people, and Detroit has been a manufacturing presence in the region since 1938.
