Daimler Truck and Volvo Group are launching a 50/50 joint venture in Gothenburg to develop a software platform for heavy-duty trucks, aiming to set an industry standard while remaining competitors in other areas.
Date: October 28, 2024Gothenburg, Sweden/Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany- Daimler Truck AG., and Volvo Group have finalized an agreement to establish a joint venture focused on developing a software-defined vehicle platform and a dedicated truck operating system. This venture, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, will enable both companies and potential future customers to integrate standalone digital functions into their commercial vehicles.
Ms. Karin Rådström, CEO of Daimler Truck, said, “The signing demonstrates our joint commitment to lead the digital transformation of our industry. The software and hardware from this joint venture will be crucial for achieving unprecedented levels of safety, comfort, and efficiency for our customers.”
Mr. Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group, said, “We are joining forces to redefine software architecture and pioneer a new era of self-optimizing trucks. Together we are removing complexity to allow our customers to unlock higher levels of connectivity, safety and efficiency and continually push for a greater performance. It is a revolutionary response to the challenges of our modern world, and we are proud to be setting the industry standard.”
The joint venture will focus on specifying and procuring centralized, high-performance control units for commercial vehicles, capable of managing large data volumes. It aims to create an operating system and development tools, allowing vehicle manufacturers to build their own digital features. This approach will decouple software from hardware, enabling customers to buy and update applications over the air, enhancing efficiency and user experience.
Despite the collaboration, Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will continue as competitors, offering distinct products and digital solutions. The transaction is set to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approval.
