Delhi's Air Quality Plummets, Emergency Measures Implemented

Delhi(NCR)- In recent days, the national capital has been grappling with persistent toxic air quality issues, and the situation is expected to worsen further, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) already surpassing the 450 mark. Consequently, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has initiated the fourth stage of its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to address the escalating air pollution concerns.

This latest stage of the plan, effective from November 5, aims to tackle the deteriorating air quality caused primarily by the influx of smoke from crop burning in neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana. To combat vehicular pollution and enhance air quality, several measures have been put in place.

One of the significant actions taken is the temporary ban on the entry of all trucks into the national capital region (NCR), except for those transporting essential goods or using CNG or electric technology. Additionally, non-Delhi-registered light commercial vehicles (LCVs) that are not running on CNG, electric, or BS-VI compliant technology are also restricted from entering the city, unless they are engaged in transporting essential commodities or offering essential services. Furthermore, there is a temporary ban on non-BS-VI-compliant diesel four-wheeled vehicles, including cars and SUVs, within the national capital and its neighboring areas.

Under GRAP Stage-4, several key measures have been put in place to mitigate the impact of air pollution:

Truck Entry Restrictions: To reduce vehicular emissions, the entry of all trucks into the national capital region (NCR) has been temporarily banned, with exceptions made only for those transporting essential commodities or employing environmentally friendly technologies like CNG or electric vehicles.
LCV Restrictions: Non-Delhi-registered light commercial vehicles (LCVs) that do not operate on CNG, electric, or BS-VI compliant technology are barred from entering the city, except for those involved in the transportation of essential goods or provision of essential services.
Diesel Vehicle Ban: Non-BS-VI-compliant diesel four-wheeled vehicles, including cars and SUVs, are temporarily prohibited within the national capital and its neighboring areas. This step aims to reduce emissions from older, more polluting vehicles.
Construction Halts: All construction and demolition activities related to public projects have been directed to come to a complete standstill. This is to prevent the release of dust and particulate matter into the air, which can exacerbate air quality issues.
