New Delhi- Department General of Foreign Trade under Ministry of Commerce of New Delhi, has announced the restriction of tyre imports used for  Buses, Trucks, Trailers cars (including racing), two wheelers and bicycle including radial and Pneumatic tyres (tubeless)1, in a move aimed at avoid imports and boost domestic supplies on 12th June 2020.

Imports of these tyres were worth $260.72 million in April-February of 2019-20 as against $330.72 million in April-February of 2018-19.

With demand slumping during the lockdown due to the Covid pandemic, domestic companies are seeking measures to boost manufacturing which will also enhance employment opportunities.

K M Mammen, Chairman, Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) said “The move has come as a sentiment booster for the industry that has been bearing the brunt of the slowdown in the auto sector and disruption caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Emboldened by the development, the tyre industry in India is looking at better than expected domestic production and increased exports from the country,"

.1Pneumatic tyres or tubeless tyres are wheels with a metal hub with a rubber tire mounted to it. Instead of being solid in nature, the tire is filled with air or foam to the desired pressure level to achieve the appropriate load and deflection characteristics.
