HORIBA India opens its first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) test bed facility in Chakan, Pune, with an investment of Rs 28-30 crore.

Pune - HORIBA India Private Ltd., a subsidiary of Kyoto-based HORIBA Ltd., has introduced first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) test bed facility at the HORIBA India Technical Center in Chakan, Pune. The facility, designed to test hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, aims to drive progress in energy efficiency and sustainability. The project represents an investment of Rs 28-30 crore.
The Chakan facility will include an Experience Zone showcasing technologies like the Hydrogen Gas Analyzer, Hydrogen Fuel Flow Meter, and Laser Spectroscopic Motor Exhaust Gas Analyzer. The center has also developed systems for two- and three-wheeler chassis dynamometers, electric vehicle testing, and environmental monitoring.
The facility, capable of testing engines up to 380 kilowatts for the Indian commercial vehicle segment, aims to meet the demand for green automotive solutions. The inauguration was attended by Dr. George Gillespie and Dr. Rajeev Gautam, who highlighted hydrogen's role in carbon neutrality and HORIBA's commitment to sustainability, with goals to reduce CO2 emissions by 42% by 2033 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
HORIBA India has achieved over 15% annual growth, with around 500 employees across manufacturing facilities in Pune, Nagpur, and Haridwar, supporting expansion into tier-2 cities. Globally, HORIBA Ltd. operates in 29 countries, employs over 8,000 people, and recorded 290 billion Japanese yen in sales in 2023. The company leads the market in emission measurement systems with an 80% global share and mass flow controllers with a 60% share.
