Turin, Italy- Iveco Bus is a brand of Iveco Group N.V., is strengthening sustainable public transport in Messina with the delivery of 29 units of E-WAY electric buses to local operator ATM S.p.A. The supply forms part of a broader 54-vehicle procurement programme secured through the Consip framework agreement. The first units delivered include 9.5-metre and 12-metre E-WAY models designed primarily for depot charging, with the standard version also prepared for pantograph charging. The remaining vehicles, currently in production, will include 12 articulated 18-metre E-WAY buses equipped with pantograph charging systems.
Built to match Messina’s operational needs, the E-WAY fleet features the latest-generation Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to enable real-time vehicle monitoring, improved service planning, and detailed performance management. The buses also include passenger information systems to enhance comfort and the overall travel experience.
Safety and accessibility are key highlights of the new vehicles. They are fitted with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to support safer driving and protect passengers and other road users. Accessibility provisions include a dedicated wheelchair space and a boarding ramp to ensure easier access for all passengers.
The new electric buses mark a significant step in ATM Messina’s fleet renewal, supporting cleaner and quieter urban mobility with zero tailpipe emissions. The investment is aligned with the city’s long-term strategy to modernise public transport and accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility solutions.

Ms. Carla Grillo, President of ATM, noted that the operator’s green fleet has been steadily expanding through strategic decisions made since 2020 in coordination with the City of Messina. She added that, according to the latest ASSTRA report, ATM is progressing on ecological transition at a pace faster than the national average, and confirmed that by June 2026, a further 18 electric buses are expected 12 articulated vehicles primarily assigned to the Shuttle line and six 8-metre buses.
