Gurugram- The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)., India’s largest container port, has launched a new fleet of electric trucks at its Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal, marking a major step in the port’s push toward decarbonisation and sustainable logistics. The event also saw the signing of an MoU between JNPA and the Isaac Centre for Public Policy (ICPP), Ashoka University, to develop a Logistics Cost Index, providing a reference framework for tariff determination across cargo types and commodities.
Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, said, “The electrification of our logistics fleet sends a powerful message that India’s ports are embracing the future and setting benchmarks in sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. He highlighted initiatives such as solar and wind energy adoption, LNG and hydrogen fuel infrastructure, and electrification of cargo-handling equipment, all contributing to India’s green maritime transition.
JNPA, which handles nearly half of India’s container trade, aims to lead the national logistics transformation under PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy. The deployment of EV trucks demonstrates the port’s alignment with India’s 2070 net-zero target and the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). By adopting commercial-scale EV solutions, JNPA is reducing emissions, particulate pollution, and noise in port operations, creating a replicable model for other ports nationwide.
“These EV trucks represent a paradigm shift toward a cleaner, greener, and more resilient port ecosystem. Sustainability is no longer an adjunct to growth—it is its foundation,” said Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Chairperson, JNPA.
Through this initiative, JNPA reinforces its position as a trailblazer in integrating environmental stewardship with operational excellence, setting new standards for sustainable port operations under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Green Ports initiative.
