Škoda Auto India unveils all-new Kylaq

Mumbai- ŠKODA AUTO VOLKSWAGEN India Private Limited., has unveiled its highly anticipated SUV, the Kylaq, debut in Mumbai. Representing a new chapter for Škoda in India, the Kylaq aims to capture new markets and customers. Initially announced in February, the SUV underwent pre-production drives in October. With bookings set to open on December 2, 2024, the Kylaq is poised to make a significant impact in the Indian market.

Mr. Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto, said, “The Škoda Kylaq, our first sub-4-metre SUV, is designed in India for India as a new entry point to our brand,” said the company. “With India being a key market, the Kylaq targets customers in the fast-growing SUV segment. Featuring the debut of our Modern Solid design language and over 25 safety technologies, it offers a wide range of variants and a competitive starting price of INR 7,89,000 (Ex-Showroom), making it the most accessible Škoda model in India.”

Škoda Auto India engaged the nation in naming its new sub-4m SUV, resulting in the name "Kylaq," inspired by the Sanskrit word for crystal and Mount Kailash. This adds to Škoda's Indian SUV lineup, alongside the larger Kushaq (meaning "emperor" in Sanskrit) and the flagship Kodiaq 4x4.

Mr. Martin Jahn, Škoda Auto Board Member for Sales and Marketing, said, “The Škoda Kylaq is our third model that is 'made in India for India' and it represents a significant milestone in our regional sales strategy. By offering an exceptional price-value proposition, a spacious and functional interior, numerous advanced safety features, and superior handling, the Kylaq is poised to attract a broad range of new customer groups. We are confident that the Kylaq is the right step to make European technology more accessible to potential customers and strengthen our brand presence on the Indian market.”

The Škoda Kylaq sets a new benchmark with segment-first features like six-way electric ventilated front seats and a unique Stowing Space for the parcel tray. It offers a spacious 446-litre boot, expandable to 1,256 litres, Auto Climatronic, cruise control, paddle shifters, an electric sunroof on select variants, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 25.6 cm infotainment screen alongside a 20.32 cm Virtual Cockpit.

Mr. Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said, “Today is another important milestone in our India journey with the World Premiere of the Škoda Kylaq. Kylaq has generated tremendous excitement and buzz through 2024. And I’m extremely proud to unveil the Škoda Kylaq to India and to the world. With its high levels of localisation, unmatched driving dynamics and uncompromising safety, Kylaq will make a significant impact in the market.”

The Škoda Kylaq introduces India to the brand’s new Modern Solid design language, featuring a bold, clean-lined exterior. A standout black grille with 3D ribs and a reimagined “four eyes” headlight design give it a striking presence. It’s also the first Škoda in India to sport the new Škoda wordmark on the rear and a bold front lower spoiler in aluminium optics.

Ms. Oliver Stefani, Head of Škoda Design, said, “With the new Kylaq, our Škoda Design team has preserved and re-interpreted key Škoda design elements, combining them with new ideas and visual accents. It is one of the hallmarks of our new Modern Solid design language, ushering in a new era for design in a car that ushers in a New Era for us in India. Modern Solid stands for solidity, functionality and authenticity while conveying a sense of safety and strength. The Škoda Kylaq, with its distinctive shape, minimalist and clean looks and functional features like a high ground clearance is a perfect embodiment of our new design approach to customers in India.”

Mr. Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Škoda Auto India, said, “The Kylaq marks a New Era for Škoda in India, powering our growth in one of the country’s most competitive segments. With segment-leading features like six-way electric seat adjustment and class-leading boot space, the Kylaq builds on our India-focused lineup following the Kushaq and Slavia. We’re committed to accessible pricing, bringing European technology to more customers in India. Though compact, the Kylaq is truly larger than life, which is why we’re launching it with an unprecedented motion picture premiere.”

The Škoda Kylaq showcases a refined, minimalist headlight design with slim daytime running lights and crystalline LED elements for low and high beams. Its compact, dynamic silhouette features robust cladding around wheel arches, giving it a strong SUV presence. Measuring 3,995 mm in length, 1,783 mm in width, and with 189 mm of ground clearance, the Kylaq is designed for agility. Its distinct rear T-shaped light signature, wide black stripe with the Škoda wordmark, and new Olive Gold color—exclusive to the Kylaq—enhance its modern appeal.

Mr. Jan Bures, Executive Director, Sales, Marketing and Digital, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India said, “The Kylaq’s premiere in a larger-than-life movie backdrop is apt for our first ever compact SUV. It may be sub 4 metres in length, but it is larger-than-life on the basis of the growth, sales and penetration it will drive when it hits roads in India. The Kylaq packs in quite a few firsts for us in terms of features, design, dynamics and even market strategy.”

The Škoda Kylaq offers powerful performance with its 1.0 TSI engine, reaching 100 kph in 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 188 kph. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform with over 25 safety features, it ensures a high safety standard. Tested extensively across diverse terrains and climates, it is designed for durability. Manufactured sustainably at the Chakan plant, the Kylaq incorporates eco-friendly practices, using solar energy, water positivity, and sustainable materials like bamboo-fibre.
