Tokyo, Japan – Komatsu Ltd., a heavy equipment manufacturer, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Applied Intuition, a U.S.-based vehicle intelligence company, to co-develop advanced software and autonomy solutions for its next-generation mining equipment.
The partnership will focus on creating a software-defined vehicle (SDV) and autonomy platform that acts as the central intelligence of Komatsu’s future mining machines. This unified system will deliver continuous feature updates, integrate data management and cybersecurity, and offer flexible autonomy ranging from operator-assist functions to full autonomy across varied mining conditions.
The platform will also embed machine learning and AI, enabling equipment to adapt to changing site conditions and optimize performance in real time. Komatsu expects the initiative to help contractors improve productivity, reduce downtime, and scale operations efficiently across mine sizes and geographies.
Mr. Peter Salditt, president, mining business division, Komatsu, and CEO, Komatsu Mining Technologies, said, "By combining Komatsu's deep mining expertise with Applied Intuition's cutting-edge AI and SDV solutions, we're enabling a future where our equipment continuously evolves to meet customers' unique mine site needs."
Mr. Qasar Younis, co-founder and CEO of Applied Intuition, said, " The mining industry is one of the most regulated in the world, and as the bar keeps rising around emissions, human safety, and geopolitics, Applied Intuition and Komatsu plan to build the next generation of mining products and redefine modern software product development. The team is looking forward to breaking new ground and digging into the future."
This marks one of Komatsu’s most significant technology initiatives, reinforcing its vision of a fully autonomous, software-driven future for mining.
