Tokyo, Japan – Komatsu Ltd., a construction and mining equipment manufacturer, launches largest hydraulic mining excavator, the PC9000, at Suncor Fort Hills in Alberta, Canada and this marks the first deployment of the PC9000 worldwide.

Weighing 900 tonnes, the PC9000 is Komatsu’s largest hydraulic excavator and one of the biggest in its class. Designed for high-efficiency mining, it pairs seamlessly with Komatsu’s 980E ultra-class haul trucks for fast, double-sided loading, supporting autonomous haulage systems (AHS), critical for modern mining operations.

The PC9000 boasts higher digging forces, an oversized bucket, and faster cycle times, making it ideal for the demanding oil sands industry, where extreme conditions and high production volumes prevail.

Developed by Komatsu Germany Mining Division (KGM) with input from SMS Equipment and operators, the PC9000 features enhanced digging capabilities and a redesigned operator cab. This next-gen machine, focused on performance and sustainability, also boasts a hydraulic system that reduces energy consumption and emissions.

Built to withstand Alberta’s abrasive materials, extreme temperatures, and demanding production targets, the PC9000 is engineered for durability and efficiency in harsh environments. Its redesign ensures greater energy efficiency, helping reduce emissions while improving operational effectiveness.

As the PC9000 begins operations at Fort Hills, its performance will be closely observed, with high expectations for this next-generation excavator to enhance mining productivity.

The PC9000 exemplifies the shift toward larger, smarter, and more integrated mining machines. With more units arriving in the coming years, the PC9000 signals the future of mining - more efficient, sustainable, and better equipped for the demands of modern operations.
