Minnesota, United States- New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., said Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has exercised contract options for 100 new 40-foot buses including 75 units of Xcelsior hybrid-electric and 25 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric units. The order comes from New Flyer’s Q4 backlog.

Funding for the purchase will include a mix of federal, state and local sources, along with support from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission grant program. Metro plans to use the new vehicles to replace end-of-life buses, improve efficiency and enhance the passenger experience, aligning with its five-year Strategic Transformation Plan focused on safe, reliable mobility across the region.

Mr. Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, said the company will continue its long-standing partnership with Metro by supplying Buy America-compliant hybrid and battery-electric buses designed to improve performance and service quality while supporting U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Mr. Randy Clarke, Metro General Manager and CEO, said the additional hybrid and battery-electric buses will help modernize the fleet, improve customer experience, and reduce emissions, while maintaining a focus on dependable service and responsible use of public funds.
