New Flyer to deliver 170 Buses to York Region Transit

Winnipeg, Canada- NFI Group Inc. (NFI), a bus and Coach manufacturer, has announced that its subsidiary, New Flyer Industries Canada ULC (New Flyer), has secured a major contract with York Region Transit (YRT) a public transit operator, for 170 Xcelsior clean-diesel transit buses, totaling 268 equivalent units (EUs). This contract reinforces New Flyer’s position as a key provider of sustainable mobility solutions and contributes to NFI’s Q4 2024 backlog.

The order comprises 72 units of Xcelsior clean-diesel 40-foot buses and 98 units of Xcelsior clean-diesel 60-foot buses. These advanced vehicles will be delivered over the next three years, complementing YRT’s 2023 acquisition of 75 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric buses. Together, these investments will enhance service across YRT’s regular routes and the Viva Bus Rapid Transit (vivaNext) rapidways.

With a fleet of 535 vehicles, YRT operates one of Ontario’s largest bus networks, serving a population of over 1.2 million. Connecting all nine municipalities in York Region, as well as Toronto, Peel, and Durham regions, YRT plays a vital role in regional transit and mobility.

Mr. Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, NFI, said, “New Flyer’s Xcelsior clean-diesel buses lead to improved efficiency and lower operating costs, and the new fleet is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing YRT’s vital mission of connecting communities across the York region. Additionally, the buses will ensure a quiet, clean, and comfortable ride for commuters throughout the Greater Toronto Area.”
