Södertälje, Sweden- Scania AB., has unveiled its latest biogas engines, boasting 420 hp and 460 hp options that promise a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to previous models. These engines incorporate components from the advanced Super Diesel powertrain, including G25 gearboxes and axles, resulting in significant fuel savings during long-haul operations.
Initially previewed at the IAA show in Hanover, Germany, last year, these 13-liter biogas engines represent a refinement of their predecessors. The power outputs have been increased, aligning with future regulatory requirements.
Ola Henriksson, Senior Product Manager for Renewable Fuels at Scania Trucks, said that the role of biomethane fuels is in initiating immediate decarbonization efforts. The biogas engines cater to various industries and applications, offering an impressive range of capabilities. For instance, a 40-ton tractor-trailer combination can achieve up to 1,800 km with the largest Bio-LNG tank solutions. The 460-hp engine, delivering 2,300 Nm, proves ideal for European long-haul journeys.
Highlighting the synergy between the biogas engines, Scania Opticruise gearbox, and new axles, Henriksson explained that the combination enables optimal performance, resulting in a 5% reduction in fuel consumption. Scania envisions biogas vehicles as pivotal in the industry's shift away from diesel, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90% from a well-to-wheel perspective.
With the ongoing expansion and maturity of gas infrastructure in Europe and the UK due to increasing demand, Scania anticipates a growing recognition of the benefits of biogas engines. Henriksson expressed confidence that customers will appreciate the considerable advantages, including CO2 reductions, enhanced driveability, extended ranges, and reduced noise levels for drivers.
