Tuticorin,Tamil Nadu- Tata Motors Ltd., has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to deploy 40 Green Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2 ICE)-powered prime movers at the port, supporting cleaner and sustainable logistics operations.
As part of the agreement, Tata Motors will begin trials with a hydrogen-powered prime mover, followed by phased deployment of the fleet over the next two years. The project is funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, reinforcing the government’s focus on promoting green energy and sustainable port infrastructure.
Mr. Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of VOCPA, said, "The partnership is a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions at the port. The deployment of green hydrogen trucks will reduce emissions from cargo handling and set a benchmark for sustainable port logistics. The port is also planning a 2 MW electrolyzer and a dedicated hydrogen refuelling station to support these vehicles and strengthen India’s green hydrogen ecosystem."
Mr. Rajesh Kaul, Vice President and Business Head-Trucks, Tata Motors, said, "The initiative marks an important milestone in introducing hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks into real-world port operations. He highlighted that the project will demonstrate the operational feasibility and benefits of green hydrogen in logistics."
The fleet will include Tata Motors Prima 55-tonne prime movers, designed for high-efficiency cargo transport. These trucks feature advanced safety systems and improved driver comfort, making them suitable for demanding port operations.
Tata Motors continues to expand its alternative fuel vehicle portfolio, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen ICE, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, supporting India’s transition toward sustainable commercial mobility.
