Kawasaki, Japan- Toshiba Corporation., has introduced a new SCiB 24V lithium-ion battery pack, model P25H20-3, purpose-built for automotive, marine, and heavy-equipment applications and sized to directly replace conventional 24V lead-acid starter batteries. The pack is already in service on Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.’s “e-Float Terrace” electric sightseeing boat, which will begin cruises in Yokohama, Japan, this October.
While lead-acid remains popular for its low cost and high current capability, demand is accelerating for lighter, more efficient batteries with longer life and smaller environmental footprints. Toshiba’s answer is a 24V pack built around 20Ah-HP SCiB cells and designed to the D23 form factor specified in JIS D 5301 for starter batteries enabling straightforward swaps into existing installations.
The SCiB 24V pack can operate alone or be configured in series and parallel up to 2 in series and 6 in parallel to support broader power needs (48V systems up to 5.76 kWh). With high-load handling suitable for engine cranking, it targets marine vessels, commercial vehicles like buses and trucks, and heavy machinery across construction and agriculture.
Yamaha Motor’s “e-Float Terrace” pairs the pack with the company’s HARMO electric propulsion system. The vessel draws power from twenty-four SCiB 24V packs arranged as two sets of 2-in-series by 6-in-parallel (per set), delivering a 48V system totaling 11.52 kWh. The new attraction will offer scenic cruises along Yokohama’s Minato Mirai waterfront as part of Yamaha Motor’s broader push to electrify next-generation mobility, decarbonize marine transport, and enhance urban tourism.
Toshiba notes the pack’s durability in harsh environments, citing strong low-temperature performance, vibration resistance, and waterproofing that meets IPX9K and IPX7 ratings. Its long service life is intended to reduce maintenance demands, particularly for electric boats, and Toshiba plans to expand partnerships across marine and other sectors.
SCiB technology is distinguished by high safety, long cycle life, excellent low-temperature characteristics, rapid charging, high input/output power, and a wide usable state-of-charge window. Building on these attributes, Toshiba will continue to broaden the SCiB lineup and drive adoption in mobility, industrial, and energy-storage markets to support a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy future.
