New Delhi- India’s agricultural equipment industry is accelerating towards compliance with the latest TREM V emission norms, as leading manufacturers demonstrate strong readiness ahead of the regulatory deadline. The move marks a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to curb air pollution from diesel-powered farm machinery and align with global environmental standards.

TREM V (Tractor Emission Norms V) mandates stringent limits on engine emissions for off-highway vehicles, including tractors and harvesters. These norms are comparable to EU Stage V regulations and are designed to reduce harmful pollutants like NOx and particulate matter.

Leaders Take the Lead

Key OEMs are already equipped to meet the new standard:

  • Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s top tractor manufacturer, is fully prepared with its in-house TREM V-compliant engine platform.
  • Swaraj Tractors, a Mahindra subsidiary, is also aligned, sourcing compliant engines from Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd (KOEL).
  • CNH Industrial (New Holland and Case IH) has commenced pilot production of compliant models at its Indian facility.
  • John Deere and Kubota have completed TREM V engine integration and are ready for market deployment.
  • TAFE, in strategic collaboration with Germany’s DEUTZ AG, has successfully developed TREM V engines, showcasing early and decisive action.

Implementation Timeline Unlikely to Shift

While certain farming associations have requested an extension, citing cost and maintenance concerns, industry consensus suggests the government is unlikely to postpone implementation. Larger OEMs support timely enforcement, viewing it as a strategic lever to promote cleaner technology and elevate industry standards.

However, concerns remain regarding the cost impact on small and marginal farmers, with fears that higher equipment prices and maintenance costs could affect mechanization efforts in rural India.

A Balanced Path Ahead

As India transitions to a more sustainable farming ecosystem, the successful implementation of TREM V will depend on coordinated efforts across stakeholders. Industry experts suggest that the government may consider targeted subsidies, low-interest loans, or scrappage incentives to ease the shift for end-users.

TREM V is expected to bring long-term benefits including better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and improved engine performance — helping India advance both agricultural productivity and environmental responsibility.
