New Delhi - Vedanta Aluminium., an aluminium producer, has significantly expanded its fleet of lithium-ion battery-powered electric forklifts to 142 units—more than double the previous count—strengthening its leadership in sustainable industrial logistics. The milestone coincides with World Sustainable Transport Day, celebrated globally on November 26 to promote safe, inclusive, and low-emission mobility systems.
As part of its broader decarbonization strategy, Vedanta Aluminium is transitioning to cleaner mobility solutions across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. This initiative supports the company’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and fully decarbonize its Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) fleet by 2030.
A major leap has been witnessed at Vedanta’s Jharsuguda smelter alone, where 116 electric forklifts are now in operation. Their deployment is expected to eliminate approximately 4,450 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually and reduce diesel consumption by 1.63 million litres per year. Alongside environmental benefits, the electric fleet delivers improved workplace safety, lower maintenance needs, and faster charging—enhancing operational efficiency across facilities.
Mr. Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “For us, sustainability is not just a responsibility—it is a driver of transformation. Our expanded electric forklift fleet showcases how technology can empower both our operations and the planet. Importantly, it also opens doors for more inclusive workforce participation in roles traditionally seen as male-dominated.”
The initiative is enabling greater workforce inclusion with women and transgender professionals operating the forklifts. With India’s first 10-tonne electric forklifts deployed at Jharsuguda, Vedanta Aluminium is showcasing that sustainable, high-performance operations can drive a greener industrial future.
