Pella, Iowa – Vermeer Corporation., an agricultural equipment manufacturer, has introduced the MTR516 microtrencher attachment, designed to help contractors install fibre-optic cables quickly and efficiently while minimizing surface disruption, especially in urban environments.

Built for use with Vermeer RTX550 and RTX750 ride-on tractors, the MTR516 offers a clean, precise trenching solution that reduces restoration work and preserves surrounding property and infrastructure. It cuts trenches up to 17 inches (43.2 cm) deep and 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) wide, making it ideal for fiber installation projects that require minimal ground disturbance.

The MTR516 features a fully enclosed cutting wheel that contains debris and enhances vacuum suction, keeping job sites cleaner and reducing post-trench cleanup. To improve durability and uptime, the attachment includes a replaceable spoil outlet compatible with 4- or 6-inch (10.2 or 15.2 cm) vacuum hoses and bolt-in wear plates that can be serviced in the field. A dual-hinged access panel provides easy access for blade maintenance and replacement.

For cutting flexibility, the microtrencher offers wheel options with either polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) teeth for asphalt or rotary carbide teeth suited for concrete and rocky conditions. The unit can be offset up to 24 inches (61 cm) to the right, allowing for easy trenching alongside curbs. Additionally, features like single-lever depth control and optimized airflow help streamline operation and improve spoil discharge across all depths.

Mr. Nick Olsen, Product manager at Vermeer, said, "Contractors need to get fiber in the ground fast and keep the job site clean, and the MTR516 microtrencher is built for that. We leveraged our experience with rock wheel durability when designing the MTR516 microtrencher. Contractors need equipment that can handle tough conditions day after day. By incorporating principles from our rockwheel designs, we built this attachment to offer enhanced durability and maintain cutting performance, even in challenging ground like cobble."

With its focus on precision, ease of maintenance, and adaptability to various ground types, the Vermeer MTR516 microtrencher aims to accelerate fibre-optic deployments and support growing broadband infrastructure needs across urban landscapes.
