Gothenburg, Sweden- Volvo Trucks is expanding its medium-duty electric range with a new entry-level 14-tonne Volvo FL Electric, featuring a revised battery configuration aimed at city operations. The FL Electric was one of Volvo’s first all-electric truck models and has been widely adopted by transport companies thanks to its compact size, low noise levels, and zero tailpipe emissions—making it well suited for door-to-door deliveries in tight urban streets.
This new 14-tonne variant introduces a lower entry point in terms of payload and installed battery capacity, supporting Volvo’s broader push to cover more transport segments with electric trucks. According to Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, customers should choose only the battery capacity they need to maximise payload and improve profitability, positioning the new model as an efficient “inner-city workhorse.”
The 14-tonne FL Electric will be offered with multiple wheelbases, axle layouts, and battery options, allowing operators to tailor the truck to specific routes and duties. Volvo says the battery placement is designed not to interfere with bodybuilder installations on the frame, and the model can be configured with a vehicle width down to 2.4 metres to improve agility in city environments.
Volvo noted that the new batteries will also be used across other electric models, from the 16- and 18-tonne FL Electric to the FE Electric with gross combination weights up to 26 tonnes. The electric FL and FE models have been available since 2019 and are sold across multiple markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
For the 14-tonne FL Electric, Volvo states an operating range of up to around 200 km depending on conditions, with 145 kWh usable battery energy and a 180 kW electric motor. Ground clearance is 240 mm, wheelbases range from 3,800 mm to 6,500 mm, and DC charging from 20% to 80% takes about 1.28 hours with eight battery units. Production of this new variant is planned to begin in the second half of 2026.
