Gothenburg, Sweden - Volvo AB., a construction equipment manufacturer, has upgraded its L120 Electric wheel loader, a 20-metric-ton machine and the largest electric wheel loader currently offered in North America.
The L120 Electric, first introduced in 2024, now features several improvements aimed at enhancing performance, braking efficiency and application flexibility. Key upgrades include a new electric brake valve that improves responsive braking while helping recover up to 15% of energy during deceleration. Volvo said the system also helps reduce brake wear and supports braking performance even when battery charge is high or operating temperatures are extreme.
The machine also gains rimpull control to improve traction in slippery conditions. In addition, Volvo has introduced an optional waste and recycling package, which includes a specialized cab air pre-cleaner and full machine guarding for demanding work environments.
According to Volvo, the L120 Electric can deliver five to nine hours of runtime in light to medium-duty applications and is capable of matching or exceeding the performance of its diesel equivalent. The loader offers a lift capacity of 13,228 pounds.
Volvo said the machine is undergoing real-world testing at Fiskarheden Trävaru AB, one of Sweden’s largest sawmills, where it is being used in harsh winter conditions to load sawdust and wood chips. The test is being conducted in partnership with Volvo CE and Swecon.
The sawmill previously used a diesel-powered wheel loader for the same operation. Operators now connect the L120 Electric to Volvo’s PU500 mobile charger when battery levels fall below 50%.
