Harsewinkel, Germany - CLAAS KGaA mbH., an agricultural machinery manufacturer, has launched the powerful Xerion tractor in South Africa after its success in Europe, Central Asia, Australia, and North America. Imported by Kempston Agri and Claas South Africa, the Xerion delivers up to 650 hp, meeting the high-power needs of local farmers. The launch event, attended by farmers, took place on a horse racing court, showcasing the tractor’s capabilities.
The first Claas Xerion for South Africa rolled off the assembly line in Harsewinkel, Germany. The Xerion 12.650 Trac boasts 653 hp and an impressive 3,100 Nm of torque at 1,300 rpm, powered by a 15.6-liter Mercedes-Benz engine. As a special touch, Cathrina Claas-Muhlhauser signed the bonnet. The tractor was then shipped to Port Elizabeth on the Cape, where the keys were handed over at the Kempston Agri site.
The new Xerion's owners manage around 4,000 hectares in northeastern South Africa, cultivating maize and soybeans. The dual-wheeled Xerion 12.650 Trac will be primarily used for heavy-duty tillage with a subsoiler from Arlington Staalwerke. In the future, it will also be paired with a large planter.
Further momentum will come from exhibition machines at Nampo Harvest Days in Bothaville and Nampo Cape in Bredasdorp, along with a roadshow stopping at various farmers events across South Africa. Importer Kempston Agri has also ordered two demo units—one with dual wheels and another in the Terra Trac version.
Mr. Hendrik Leege, Country sales manager, said, “Seldom, a new Claas machine aroused such an excitement in South Africa. Claas South Africa and Kempston Agri have consider the Xerion 12 to well fit South African conditions, as this machine is perfect for the large fields and wide, heavy implements. Thanks to its full frame it is robust, comfortable and more precise to steer than an articulated tractor, with better power transmission and soil protection than a full crawler tractor. Unique feature in this class, is its stepless CMATIC transmission.”
