Eindhoven, Netherlands- DAF Trucks N.V., a commercial vehicle manufacturer, has set to supply 40 fully electric XD trucks to the City of Amsterdam as part of the municipality’s drive to minimize CO₂ and other emissions. The vehicles will be delivered through DAF dealer Truckland, with VDL-Translift contributing to the bodywork integration.
A key factor in Amsterdam’s decision was the bodybuilder-friendly design of the XD Electric. With battery packs positioned in multiple chassis locations directly from the factory, bodybuilders can mount additional equipment—such as stabilizer legs—without relocating electrical components.
The city also valued DAF’s choice of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are free of cobalt and nickel, offer high thermal stability, and ensure long service life. These batteries can be fully charged repeatedly with minimal impact on performance or reliability, making them highly suitable for urban operations.
Ideally suited for inner-city duties, the XD Electric features excellent cab visibility with a large windscreen, low belt line, and the standard DAF Corner View camera for enhanced safety around pedestrians and cyclists. A low-entry design with just two ergonomically placed steps further improves accessibility for drivers.
The order includes four different bodywork types: 13 rear loaders, 10 crane & hook lift trucks, and 17 front loaders—enabling the city to collect nearly all household and office waste without emissions. Each vehicle will carry three LFP battery packs (105 kWh each), powering a 170 kW or 220 kW electric motor and a 90 kW ePTO for operating loading equipment.
Mr. Roland Heijnen, Director of Waste and Resources for the Municipality of Amsterdam, said, “We are pleased with the cooperation with DAF dealer Truckland and have full confidence in a sustainable future with these electric waste trucks in Amsterdam.”
