4th generation Heat Pump, boosting EV range with advanced heat recovery
Date: August 8, 2024Seoul, Korea- Hanon Systems Co., Ltd., an automotive thermal management supplier for electrified mobility, introduced its 4th generation heat pump system in July 2024. This crucial thermal management component for EVs is now commercially available
The company's 4th generation heat pump system is the first to use a parallel heat source recovery method, capturing waste heat from the motor, battery, and external air. This heat is utilized for heating, cooling, and battery temperature management, boosting EV range. The modular system features patented technologies, integrating the Refrigerant and Coolant Control Modules into a unified unit for comprehensive thermal management, showcasing Hanon Systems' leadership in the field.
Mr. Subu Nagasubramony, co-CEO of Hanon Systems, said, “By continually refining our heat pump system design to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption requirements, Hanon Systems has contributed to extending EV driving range. As the world’s second-largest thermal management company, we will continue to strive for 'lightweight' and 'high-efficiency' components through continuous innovation."
Hanon Systems led the way in mass-producing heat pump systems with waste heat recovery in 2015. The 2018 second-generation model introduced battery thermal management, becoming the first integrated system to boost EV range. The third generation, launched in 2021, featured an 800V electric compressor on a client’s EV platform, significantly cutting charging times.
This 4th generation heat pump system was first implemented in the Kia EV3 in South Korea, and the company will expand production to the U.S. and Europe. Yoon Ho Wang, Vice President of AP Innovation Center, Hanon Systems Research Institute, said, "Through close collaboration with our client, we were able to proactively develop the world's first new technology, and we are pleased to contribute to improving the driving experience of our customers' electric vehicle users.
Hanon Systems has introduced Thin HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technology, a reduced HVAC system that is 30% smaller, creating more legroom under the dashboard while ensuring a comfortable driving experience.
