Mumbai- Henkel Adhesive Technologies India Pvt Ltd., has taken a major step towards sustainable logistics in India by launching the re-powered electric truck operation for mid-haul commercial use. This pioneering initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between Henkel, a logistics service provider, and an electric vehicle conversion solutions company. It marks a significant milestone in India's journey toward greener freight transportation.

The re-powered trucks are equipped with fully electric powertrains and are capable of traveling up to 250 kilometers on a single charge, carrying loads of up to 8 tons. This transition to electric mobility is part of a broader move to decarbonize freight operations. A single round trip on the newly deployed Chennai–Pune route is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,212 kilograms—highlighting the substantial environmental benefits of electrifying road transport.

Meanwhile, India’s rail freight infrastructure is also becoming more sustainable. Two major freight corridors—the 1,321-km Chennai to Pune route and the 713-km Pune to Halol corridor—are now fully electrified. These developments support the nationwide push for cleaner, more efficient transportation systems and reduce dependence on diesel locomotives.

This pilot initiative aligns with Henkel’s global sustainability goals, including its target to reach net-zero emissions by 2045. The company is aiming for a 90% absolute reduction in both scope 1 and 2 emissions, and an equivalent reduction across its scope 3 emissions. Achieving this will require a focus on low-impact product design, sourcing eco-friendly materials, collaborating closely with supply chain partners, and improving carbon efficiency in logistics.

The electric truck rollout represents one of several bold steps Henkel India is taking to decarbonize its operations and support the country’s sustainable development agenda. Operating in India since 1996, Henkel Adhesive Technologies is a global leader in adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings, serving over 800 industrial segments and more than 100,000 customers worldwide.

In recent years, Henkel has expanded its presence and capabilities in India. The company operates five manufacturing sites, including its LEED Gold–certified Kurkumbh facility near Pune. In mid-2024, Henkel completed Phase III of the Kurkumbh plant, adding a new Loctite production line equipped with advanced automation, including ASRS and Industry 4.0 systems, with a goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2030.

In February 2025, Henkel further bolstered its footprint with the launch of a 17,000 sq. ft. Application Engineering Center in Chennai and a new electronics-focused manufacturing unit at Kurkumbh. These expansions are designed to support the growing needs of India’s electronics industry under the government’s Make in India and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

From automotive and electronics to packaging and general manufacturing, Henkel India continues to drive innovation, support local industrial growth, and lead the charge toward a more sustainable and responsible future.
