Hyssna, Sweden – Komatsu Ltd., a heavy equipment manufacturer, has announced its decision to acquire Malwa Forest AB, a Swedish manufacturer of lightweight and compact forestry machinery, through its wholly owned subsidiary Komatsu Forest AB. The transaction is expected to be completed on April 1, 2026, subject to customary closing procedures and other conditions.
The move strengthens Komatsu’s position in the forestry sector by adding Malwa’s expertise in lightweight and compact cut-to-length (CTL) forestry machines designed specifically for thinning operations. Malwa’s product portfolio includes wheeled harvesters and forwarders known for their compact size, maneuverability and reduced impact on soil and surrounding trees.
Thinning plays an important role during forest growth, helping support healthier tree development. However, conventional thinning operations can sometimes damage tree roots and affect future growth. This challenge has become more significant in the Nordic region, where softer ground conditions caused by snowmelt and increased rainfall linked to climate change have driven demand for machinery that can carry out thinning efficiently while minimizing damage to soil and trees.
By acquiring Malwa, Komatsu will gain access to technologies and products in the lightweight and compact CTL segment, an area where it previously had limited offerings. The company also plans to create synergies by combining Malwa’s specialized machinery with Komatsu’s global sales and service network.
With this acquisition, Komatsu aims to broaden its forestry machinery lineup and offer solutions ranging from compact machines for low-impact thinning to larger, high-productivity equipment, supporting value creation across the circular forestry process.
