Mumbai- The Maharashtra government has approved the introduction of electric bike taxi services in all cities with a population of over one lakh. This initiative is part of a larger push toward sustainable mobility and was formalized through a government resolution issued on April 21.
Under the new rules, only electric two-wheelers will be permitted for these services, and passengers must be 12 years or older. Each trip will be limited to a maximum of 15 kilometers, ensuring short-distance, efficient commutes within city limits.
Aggregators looking to offer e-bike taxi services must operate a minimum of 50 electric bikes and obtain a license from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), which will be valid for five years. Fares for the services will also be determined by the respective RTAs.
All bike taxis must have a uniform color, and “Bike Taxi” must be clearly displayed along with the service provider’s name and contact number. For safety, especially for women, every e-bike must have a partition between the rider and the passenger, and protective gear must be provided during the monsoon.
Operators are required to run their services via a secure mobile app or website, complying with all privacy and safety standards. Features such as GPS tracking, emergency contacts, and background checks for drivers are mandatory.
Drivers must be aged 20 to 50 years, hold a valid driving license and transport badge, and can work up to 8 hours a day. Aggregators are also required to provide proper training to all drivers before launch.
Although some bike taxi options are already available through apps, these services are currently unauthorized, and authorities are taking action against such operators.
This move is expected to deliver several benefits, including reduced pollution, faster travel, job creation, less traffic congestion, and a new public transport option in urban areas.
