MFTBC to partner with True 2 Materials Pte. Ltd. (T2M) on pilot facility for recovering anode, cathode and electrolyte materials from EV batteries
Date: September 10, 2024Kawasaki, Japan- Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC)., will build a test facility for recovering materials from used electric vehicle (EV) batteries at its Kawasaki Plant, in partnership with True 2 Materials Pte. Ltd (T2M)., Starting in 2025, the companies will use the pilot plant to evaluate the reusability of anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials by battery cell makers.
As the demand for EVs grows with global decarbonization trends, the number of used EV batteries is set to rise. These batteries can either be reused directly or recycled for raw materials. MFTBC, in collaboration with T2M, is exploring a business venture to recycle used batteries from EV trucks and passenger cars into high-quality blended materials for new battery cells.
MFTBC will initially focus on commercializing battery recycling in Japan, with potential future expansion overseas. By developing efficient retreatment processes to maximize the value of battery materials, MFTBC aims to reduce EV costs and facilitate a smoother transition to e-mobility for customers.
T2M's Total Material Recovery (TMR) technology processes used and scrap batteries into usable anodes and cathodes with minimal material loss and reduced environmental impact. Unlike traditional methods, TMR employs nano-level molecular techniques, recovering up to 99.9% of battery resources and significantly lowering CO2 emissions. This approach also aims to cut metal processing costs, which typically make up about 75% of recycling expenses.
This initiative is part of MFTBC’s FUSO eMobility Solutions framework to support customers’ EV shift. MFTBC will continue to develop products and services that contribute to realizing carbon neutrality by 2050.
