Poland – PKM Jaworzno, a pioneer of zero-emission public transport in Poland, is celebrating a major milestone—10 years since introducing the country’s first electric bus. The Solaris Urbino 12 electric, delivered in 2015, marked the beginning of the city’s transformation into one of Europe’s leaders in clean urban mobility.

Today, more than 80% of PKM Jaworzno’s services are operated by electric buses, with that number set to rise to 85% following a new order for seven additional Solaris Urbino 12 electric vehicles. These new 12-meter buses are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2026 and will further strengthen the city’s commitment to sustainable, zero-emission transport.

The current electric fleet includes buses in three lengths—8.9, 12, and 18 meters—enabling PKM to match vehicle capacity with route needs and passenger demand.

The new Solaris electric buses will be equipped with state-of-the-art features, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), cameras replacing traditional side mirrors, air conditioning, USB chargers, and surveillance systems for increased passenger comfort and safety. Each vehicle will be powered by batteries with a capacity of around 400 kWh and can be charged using both pantograph and plug-in connections.

The order was signed during an event marking the anniversary of the first electric bus—still in operation—which has traveled more than 700,000 kilometers in fully electric mode over the past decade.

Javier Iriarte, CEO of Solaris Bus & Coach said “This is a great source of pride for me and the entire team, that the first electric bus we delivered to Poland launched the transformation of public transport in Jaworzno – and across the entire country. What gives us even greater satisfaction is that this story continues – the city consistently invests in a zero-emission fleet and leads the way in mobility transformation on a European scale. We are proud to have been part of this change from the very beginning,”

Zbigniew Nosal, CEO of PKM Jaworzno  said “Ten years ago, together with Mayor Paweł Silbert, we made a decision that forever changed the face of public transport in Jaworzno. Today, we can see that it was a step in the right direction – not only for the environment, but also for our residents. The new electric buses mark the next stage of this journey. We are pleased that, together with Solaris, we can continue to develop modern and people-friendly urban mobility,”.
