Texas, USA- Toyota Motor North America has signed a definitive agreement with Hyroad Energy to deploy 40 units of hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 commercial trucks in Southern California, strengthening Toyota’s push toward cleaner heavy-duty logistics.
Announced at ACT Expo, the partnership brings together trucks, maintenance, fleet software, data services and hydrogen fuel supply under one operating framework. Hyroad will provide the vehicles and related support services, while Toyota will supply hydrogen through its refueling infrastructure currently being developed in Ontario, California.
The collaboration is designed to demonstrate how hydrogen fuel cell trucks can support large-scale commercial logistics with faster refueling, long driving range and zero local emissions. A fuel cell Class 8 truck can carry up to 70 kg of hydrogen, refuel in around 15–20 minutes, and deliver an estimated driving range of up to 500 miles between fill-ups. Its only local emission is water vapor.
For Toyota, the agreement reflects its broader hydrogen strategy, built on more than three decades of fuel cell development. The company views heavy-duty trucking as an important proving ground for hydrogen adoption, especially where long range, high payload capability and quick refueling are critical.
Hyroad’s full-service model is intended to reduce the operational barriers that have slowed alternative-fuel truck adoption. As an OEM-agnostic operator, Hyroad combines vehicles, hydrogen supply, maintenance, software, parts and fleet support into a bundled solution for commercial operators.
