Arriva plc is deploying 16 new electric buses in the Czech Republic, supported by a new charging hub. This marks the largest electric bus purchase in the country.
Date: August 28, 2024Sunderland, United Kingdom- Arriva plc., is advancing its commitment to decarbonizing public transport across Europe by introducing 16 new electric buses into its operations in the Czech Republic. These next-generation vehicles will operate from a newly constructed charging hub in Kladno, the country’s largest city, as the city starts phasing out 47 diesel and CNG buses. This marks the largest single purchase of electric buses in the Czech Republic to date.
Mr. Sian Leydon, Arriva Group’s Managing Director for Mainland Europe, said, “The Czech Republic's transition to electric buses is gaining significant momentum, bringing the country closer to a future where zero-emission public transport is the preferred option. These new buses not only demonstrate our long-term commitment to the Czech Republic but also reinforce our ambition to be the leading public transport provider in Europe. We are improving air quality, enhancing the customer experience, and making a strong case for drivers to leave their cars at home.”
In 2021, Arriva Czech Republic committed to zero-emission buses following a €57 million, 10-year contract with ČSAD MHD Kladno. The new SOR NS buses, built locally, come in 12-metre and 18-metre articulated models, featuring fast-charging batteries with longer ranges and improved lifespans. Passengers will benefit from Wi-Fi, advanced air conditioning with heat pump technology, USB ports, and low floors for easy access.
Arriva Czech Republic, in collaboration with ČEZ ESCO and ČSAD MHD Kladno, has developed a state-of-the-art charging hub with nine ultra-fast charging stands, each offering 150 kW capacity. This facility is the largest and most advanced of its kind in the Czech Republic. Additional hubs will be built in Kladno as Arriva transitions more of the city's CNG and diesel buses to electric.
The €10.2 million investment for the 16 electric buses and initial charging hub was funded by the Czech Republic's EU-supported Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP), with an additional €3.8 million contribution from Arriva.
