Munich, Germany - BMW M GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG, ignite technology is a new patented engine innovation from BMW, set to enter production in its high-performance petrol models. The technology will first be introduced in the six-cylinder inline engines of the BMW M2, BMW M3 and BMW M4 from mid-2026.

At the heart of this system is a pre-chamber ignition setup placed inside the cylinder head. It works along with the normal spark plug system to improve combustion inside the engine. At lower and medium speeds, the regular spark plug operates first. At higher engine speeds and loads, the pre-chamber ignition takes the lead, helping the fuel-air mixture burn faster and more efficiently.

This faster combustion helps reduce knocking, lowers exhaust gas temperature and improves overall engine efficiency. BMW has also added a higher compression ratio and turbochargers with variable turbine geometry to support the new system.

The main benefit of BMW M Ignite technology is lower fuel consumption during high-load driving, especially on race tracks. This means drivers can complete more laps using the same amount of fuel. The technology also helps BMW M models meet the upcoming Euro 7 emission standard.

BMW M Ignite technology will be introduced in all BMW M3 and BMW M4 variants from July 2026, while production of the BMW M2 with this system will begin in August 2026. Engine displacement and power output will remain the same as the current models.
