Irving, Texas - Caterpillar Inc., a construction machinery manufacturer, has introduced its next-generation 6040 hydraulic mining shovel, designed for high-production mining applications with improved fuel efficiency, stronger hydraulic performance and enhanced operator comfort.
The 400-metric-ton-class shovel is powered by twin 2,079-horsepower Cat C32B engines, allowing the machine to operate or move away from the digging face using a single engine when needed. Caterpillar says the new hydraulic system dynamically delivers oil flow and pressure based on real-time demand, helping reduce fuel consumption, excess heat and component wear. The company claims the system is 15% more efficient than conventional shovel hydraulics.
The 6040 delivers up to 269,996 pound-feet of breakout force in face shovel configuration and 252,460 pound-feet in backhoe configuration. Its five-circuit hydraulic system supports multiple cylinder, travel and swing functions, while a closed-loop swing system helps improve cycle times and energy efficiency.
The shovel is sized to load a Cat 785 truck in four passes or a Cat 796 AC in eight passes, supporting faster truck loading in large-scale mining operations.
Operator comfort has also been improved with a redesigned cab offering better visibility, lower interior noise levels of 68 decibels, a new air conditioning system, ergonomic joystick controls and a 10-inch touchscreen display. A floor window improves track visibility, while Caterpillar says overall visibility to digging and loading areas has increased by 40%.
The new 6040 also adds live sensor monitoring, diagnostic alerts and improved serviceability features aimed at increasing machine uptime and reducing maintenance interruptions.
