New Delhi - The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)., has developed a new electric tractor that promises to cut farming costs by up to 64 percent while promoting sustainable agriculture. The tractor will soon be introduced across India, including in Chhattisgarh, offering farmers an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to diesel models.

According to Dr. Pradeep Rajan, Chief Scientist at CSIR, the e-tractor can run for 4–5 hours on a single charge and is easy to operate for both men and women. It takes only four hours to fully charge and operates smoothly without the fatigue often associated with diesel tractors.

A diesel tractor typically uses 1.5 liters of fuel per hour, while the e-tractor consumes just 18–20 units of electricity for five hours of work, resulting in substantial savings. With a 26 HP power output, it can easily handle common implements such as ploughs, rotavators, and cultivators.

The tractor’s battery lasts up to five years and supports 10,000 charge cycles, allowing it to be used for both farming and goods transport for up to six hours.

Developed over three years, this innovation is expected to reduce emissions, lower farming costs, and boost rural incomes. Experts say it could become a game changer for small and medium farmers, driving India toward greener and more profitable agriculture.
