Columbus, Indiana - Cummins Inc., a power gen company, and Komatsu Ltd., a mining equipment manufacturer, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop hybrid powertrains for surface haulage heavy mining equipment. The collaboration aims to accelerate decarbonization in large mining operations while improving efficiency and reducing fuel costs.
Komatsu’s drive system supplier, Wabtec, will also be involved, providing advanced powertrain solutions and optimization for the next generation of hybrid mining trucks. The partnership builds on Cummins’ extensive experience in diesel engines and integrates hybrid technology into both companies’ power technology roadmaps.
The joint effort will include retrofit hybrid solutions, allowing mining customers to reduce emissions and operational costs on existing fleets. These hybrid systems capture braking energy and improve productivity through faster cycle times. Pilot units are expected to deploy later this year.
Mr. Gbile Adewunmi, Cummins Vice President – Industrial Markets, Power Systems, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Komatsu to bring the latest advancements to the mining sector. This collaboration enables miners to decarbonize while improving total cost of operations.”
Mr. Dan Funcannon, Senior VP of Komatsu’s Surface Haulage Business Unit, said, “This partnership bridges current operational needs with future low-carbon goals, supporting customers’ sustainability initiatives.”
This collaboration marks a major step in advancing practical decarbonization solutions for the mining industry while enhancing operational efficiency.
