Delhi- Delhi is set to enhance its public transport system with the addition of 1,000 new electric buses by the end of March, replacing its aging fleet of CNG buses.
Announcing the initiative on Saturday, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized the government's commitment to improving fleet efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
The current batch of 1,000 CNG buses, primarily part of the cluster bus service, has reached the end of its 10-year operational life. Originally scheduled for retirement in June last year, their service was extended by nine months under former Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot. With this extension concluding this month, transport department officials have assured a seamless transition as the new electric buses are deployed.
Delhi will add 1,000 new electric buses this month to enhance public transport, announced Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh. Currently, 7,600 buses, including 2,002 electric ones, operate in the city. The government aims to expand the fleet to 11,000 buses, with 8,000 electric, by 2026.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that 3,680 more electric buses will be procured by September 2025, alongside bus depot electrification. Under the 2020 EV policy, Delhi targets 10,480 buses by 2025, 80% of which will be electric.
Meanwhile, the Mohalla bus service, planned for congested areas, remains on hold as the new government reviews its feasibility. With 4.1 million daily bus commuters, these upgrades are crucial for the city’s transit network.
