Seoul, South Korea - Hyundai Motor Group, a company from South Korea that makes cars and technology, is expanding its Center of Excellence in India to strengthen research and development in battery and electrification technologies. The initiative focuses on creating a wider pan-India network of academic and industry partners to support India-specific EV innovation and future mobility solutions.

As part of this expansion, Hyundai Motor Group has signed agreements with four new partner institutions: IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur, and Tezpur University. These institutions join the existing founding partners — IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay — forming a seven-university consortium under the Hyundai CoE platform.

The collaboration is aimed at bringing together academic expertise, research talent, and industry knowledge to accelerate the development of advanced battery systems, electrification solutions, and localized EV technologies for the Indian market. It also reflects Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to nurturing local talent and strengthening India’s role in the global electrification ecosystem.

Senior officials from Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Motor India, Hyundai Motor India Engineering Center, and representatives from the partner institutions attended the agreement ceremony in New Delhi. Through this expanded network, Hyundai aims to position the Hyundai CoE as a key industry-academia platform supporting India’s electric mobility transition.

Dr. Chang Hwan Kim, Head of the Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit, said “By bringing together the distinguished professors and emerging researchers from these seven institutes, we can create powerful synergies that will yield immense value for both Hyundai and India's sustainable growth. I strongly believe that the Hyundai CoE will grow to become the premier expert network of the Indian academic community” – Chang Hwan Kim, Head of the Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit”

Hyundai Motor Group launched a strategic investment program in 2025 to expand research activities across the Hyundai CoE network in India. The research focuses on key EV technologies, including battery cells, battery management systems, energy density, safety, durability, diagnostics, and advanced electrification solutions.

The Hyundai CoE is currently working on 39 joint projects across its seven partner universities. These projects include battery design and material research suited for India’s EV market, along with the development of an AI-powered Vehicle-to-Grid platform.

To support knowledge sharing, Hyundai will introduce a Korea Visiting Program for Indian and Korean researchers, along with global e-conferences and technology forums involving experts from government, industry, and academia.

In the long term, Hyundai aims to develop the CoE into a strong research hub that supports India’s EV transition. Through academic partnerships, research collaboration, and industry expertise, the initiative will help build innovative electric mobility solutions for India
