Swindon, United Kingdom- KGM Motors UK Limited., (formerly SsangYong) has announced the launch of its new Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain, which will debut in the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid. The company says the new system is designed to deliver an electric-like driving feel smooth, quiet and responsive while retaining the long-range ability, durability and towing capability expected from a KGM SUV. The launch forms part of KGM’s wider plan to expand its electrified model range and introduce powertrains tailored for UK drivers.
Developed in collaboration with BYD, the Dual Tech Hybrid combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an e-DHT hybrid transmission and a series-parallel, dual-motor setup. By controlling how the engine and motors share work across different driving conditions, the system aims to balance strong performance with improved real-world efficiency.
At the core of the powertrain is a newly designed petrol engine featuring Miller-cycle operation to increase thermal efficiency, plus a variable geometry turbocharger for sharper response across the rev range. Fuel injection pressure has been increased from 250 bar to 350 bar to improve combustion efficiency, helping deliver higher output with reduced emissions. KGM also highlights advanced cylinder-block coatings intended to improve durability under the frequent start-stop operation typical of hybrid use.
In this application, the petrol engine is rated at 149.6PS and 220Nm and will often operate primarily as a high-efficiency generator producing electricity for the motors and battery rather than constantly driving the wheels directly.
The hybrid system is based on what KGM describes as Korea’s first P1 + P3 dual-motor architecture. Derived from BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology and adapted by KGM into a full-hybrid configuration, it pairs a large 130kW P3 drive motor with the drivetrain for immediate response. The drive motor delivers up to 177PS and 300Nm, supporting brisk acceleration and confident overtaking with the linear feel associated with electrified powertrains.
The e-DHT (electrified dual hybrid transmission) supports multiple operating states including electric-only driving, series hybrid operation (engine as generator), and parallel hybrid or engine-drive modes depending on speed and load. The system can also charge while driving electrically, helping recover and redeploy energy more effectively in everyday use.
KGM says the vehicles automatically switch between nine operating modes including EV mode, HEV mode and engine drive mode so drivers don’t need to manage the powertrain manually. An energy flow diagram in the instrument cluster displays how power is being delivered and when regenerative braking is occurring.
Electric driving is available up to 62mph, creating a quieter environment with instant torque and smooth acceleration. At higher speeds, the petrol engine and drive motor work together for efficient motorway cruising and strong performance when needed.
Efficiency is further supported by an adjustable regenerative braking system with three selectable levels. Drivers can choose anything from a light, conventional feel to stronger regeneration for increased energy recovery. With Smart Regenerative Braking activated, the vehicle can automatically adjust regenerative deceleration based on the distance to the vehicle ahead, helping smooth braking in stop-start traffic while maximising regeneration.
Both models also receive additional comfort-focused upgrades, including extensive sound insulation to reduce engine and acceleration noise, helping keep the cabin quiet even when the engine is running. Smart frequency dampers on the shock absorbers are designed to improve body control and ride comfort across varying road surfaces and speeds.
Mr. Kevin Griffin, Managing Director of KGM Motors UK, said the new powertrain shows the direction of the brand in the UK, offering EV-like refinement alongside the range and practicality customers expect from KGM SUVs. He described the technology as a foundation for the company’s next generation of powertrains and a step toward more real-world electrified options.
The Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid also carry a design theme linked to KGM’s Korean heritage and come with a broad range of driver assistance, convenience and safety features as standard. The Actyon Hybrid adds further equipment on top of the Torres Hybrid specification, including a 360-degree camera, premium suede interior, noise-cancelling tyres, a hexagon-style steering wheel and a kick-activated power tailgate.
