KRM Launches New Grass Seed Drill for Regenerative Farming

North Yorkshire, UK - Keith Rennie Machinery Ltd., an agricultural machinery supplier, has expanded its range of direct seed drills with the introduction of a new Grass Seed (GS) model. Designed specifically for sowing directly into existing grass swards, the new model is aimed at supporting the growing number of farmers adopting regenerative practices to enhance grassland productivity without taking fields out of production.

KRM has been importing high-quality seed drills from Spanish manufacturer Sola, and the latest addition is a natural evolution driven by increasing demand for low-disturbance seeding solutions.

The GS model features robust disc coulters equipped with large, 400mm diameter notched disc openers, mounted at a shallow 5-degree angle. This ensures minimal soil disturbance while enabling efficient cutting through existing pasture and precise closing of the seed slot. Each disc is rubber-mounted to provide additional protection and durability in stony or challenging ground conditions.

To ensure consistent sowing depth, the disc coulters are followed by a “prizm” type roller. The system uses a combination of 450mm fixed wheels and 500mm floating, self-cleaning wheels to consolidate the soil, promoting optimal seed-to-soil contact and encouraging rapid germination.

The new drill is available with a variety of hopper configurations to meet different farming needs. The standard option includes a 300-litre pressurised single-product hopper. For larger-scale operations, a 2,000-litre hopper can be specified. This larger version is also available with a split configuration, allowing simultaneous, independent application of both seed and fertiliser.

Additionally, users can opt for a Sola Mini Seed hopper, which allows a third product, such as clover seed, micro granular fertiliser, or crop protection products to be metered and applied independently.

In more challenging field conditions, the GS drill incorporates a hydraulic weight transfer system, which allows the tractor’s weight to be used to increase downforce without adding physical weight to the machine. This system enables smaller tractors to be used effectively, reducing compaction and lowering fuel consumption.

The new GS model will be showcased throughout the upcoming agricultural show season, offering farmers a practical and efficient tool for improving grassland while aligning with sustainable farming practices.
