Ehingen, Germany - LIEBHERR-INTERNATIONAL AG., a construction machinery manufacturer, has successfully completed a major overhead crane renewal project at its crawler and large mobile crane assembly hall in Ehingen, working in partnership with Schmidbauer Group and its subsidiary Rieger & Moser.

The project was carried out during Liebherr’s company holiday at the beginning of August, when the assembly hall’s entire nave of overhead cranes was replaced. The new double-girder overhead travelling cranes, with lifting capacities ranging from 40 to 63 tonnes and spans of 28 meters, were installed within a tight non-production window. The largest, a 63-tonne unit, is equipped with two hoists. Depending on their lifting capacity, the cranes weigh up to 41 tonnes each.

The project posed logistical and technical challenges due to the size of the cranes, the restricted hall space, and the need to dismantle and reassemble equipment almost simultaneously. Special assembly jibs were required to operate mobile cranes under the hall ceiling with only centimeters of clearance.

A three-crane team from Schmidbauer Group managed the operation:

      • LTC 1045-3.1 dismantled the trolleys and hoists.
      • LTM 1110-5.1 removed the old bridge girders.
      • LTM 1130-5.1 installed the new girders.

The expertise of Schmidbauer’s operators, combined with Liebherr’s sensitive crane control systems, ensured precise handling of the large components despite the confined working conditions.

The project also coincides with a milestone anniversary for Rieger & Moser, which is marking 80 years of operation in 2025. Founded in 1945 as an automotive workshop, the company has grown into a key regional partner for industry, construction, and infrastructure, and is now part of the Schmidbauer Group.
