Mumbai - Maharashtra has taken a significant step toward sustainable agriculture with the rollout of its first electric tractor. The 45HP electric tractor was officially launched and registered at the Thane Regional Transport Office (RTO), in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. The initiative is being seen as a major push toward affordable and eco-friendly farming in the state.

Mr. Pratap Sarnaik, Transport Minister, said, “Designed primarily for agricultural operations, e-tractors require very less amount to plough one acre, whereas diesel tractors cost high. This reduction in operational costs, combined with lower maintenance requirements, offers substantial daily savings for farmers.”

The tractor has been specifically built for farm use, with the goal of supporting both small and large-scale agricultural operations. Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil and representatives from the manufacturing company were also present at the event, underscoring the official support behind the launch.

During the launch, Minister Sarnaik reiterated the state government’s commitment to increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), targeting 20–30% EV penetration on roads by 2030. As part of this broader initiative, electric tractors will benefit from toll exemptions, direct subsidies, and other financial incentives.

In addition to subsidies, the state is exploring interest-free loan schemes to make e-tractors accessible to farmers who may not be able to afford an upfront purchase. One such option is through the Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation, which could help reduce the financial burden on buyers.

With strong policy support, financial incentives, and a clear focus on farmer welfare, Maharashtra's first electric tractor is poised to lead the way toward a more sustainable and cost-effective agricultural future.
