Tamile Nadu- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, flagged off the services of 20 modern multi-axle, air-conditioned luxury buses for the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) at the Island Grounds, Chennai. The induction marks a major step in strengthening premium public transport in the state, with SETC introducing 20 new Volvo 9600 luxury coaches into its long-distance network.
The new fleet comprises 15-metre fully air-conditioned seater coaches, reflecting the Tamil Nadu government’s push to upgrade intercity travel with better comfort, safety and reliability. The launch event was attended by senior ministers and officials, including Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar, P.K. Sekar Babu, senior transport department officials, and SETC and MTC leadership, along with elected representatives.
Built at Volvo Buses India’s manufacturing facilities, the Volvo 9600 coaches are positioned for long-haul operations. Each bus features a premium 51-seat layout, with ergonomically designed seats and calf support, along with advanced safety features and enhanced ride quality, aimed at improving passenger experience and service standards across SETC routes.
At the event, Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President – Bus Division, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the company was pleased to support SETC and the Tamil Nadu government in strengthening intercity mobility, adding that the Volvo 9600 is designed to deliver high levels of comfort, safety and operational efficiency.
The newly inducted buses will operate on key intercity and interstate corridors, including Chennai–Coimbatore, Chennai–Tiruppur, Chennai–Salem, Chennai–Thanjavur, Chennai–Trichy, Chennai–Nagercoil, Chennai–Thiruchendur, Chennai–Bengaluru, Coimbatore–Bengaluru, and Trichy–Thiruchendur.
