Melbourne, Australia- Toll Holdings Limited., has added a Volvo FE Electric 4x2 rigid truck to its fleet to support Origin Energy’s LPG cylinder deliveries, marking a major move toward lower-emission heavy transport in Australia.

Designed specifically for urban environments and the specialised demands of LPG distribution, the electric truck delivers an operating range of approximately 200–275 km per day. It is expected to cut around 39 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year compared with a conventional diesel vehicle, while also reducing noise and improving local air quality.

“This project shows that electric heavy vehicles are not just a concept, they’re a practical solution for complex supply chains,” said Michael Rugendyke, President Resources & Industrials at Toll. “Our partnership with Origin Energy highlights how collaboration can accelerate the transition to cleaner logistics.”

The deployment is part of Toll’s broader $67 million investment in battery-electric trucks and charging infrastructure, supported by funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) under its Driving the Nation program. In total, 28 electric vehicles will be rolled out across Toll’s national network under this initiative.

Mr. Amber Fennell, General Manager of Origin LPG, said, “Our partnership with Toll has enabled us to develop this electric vehicle specifically designed for LPG cylinder delivery. This project has been in development for over a year as part of our 10-year strategic partnership. Based on the success of this trial, we are excited about the potential for electric vehicles to transform our LPG operations in the future.”

“As a leading Australian energy company, we recognise our role in the transition to a low-emissions future and are committed to sustainable choices that benefit both customers and the environment,” she added.

The Volvo FE Electric truck is now operating in metropolitan Brisbane, transporting LPG cylinders between Origin facilities. Data from the trial—covering performance, charging behaviour and overall efficiency—will help shape Toll and Origin’s future strategies for low- and zero-emission freight operations.
