Wolfsburg, Germany – Volkswagen AG, an automotive manufacturer, has introduced the ID. Polo GTI, its first fully electric model to carry the iconic GTI badge. The compact electric sports car delivers 166 kW / 226 PS and 290 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds while remaining practical for everyday use. Like the original Golf GTI launched in 1976, the new ID. Polo GTI sends power to the front wheels and uses a standard electronically controlled front differential lock for improved grip and handling.
The model was unveiled at the 24h race at the Nürburgring, highlighting Volkswagen’s aim to bring the GTI performance character into the electric era. The car features GTI-specific technologies such as adaptive DCC sports suspension, progressive steering, and a dedicated GTI driving profile, which sharpens the motor response, steering, chassis setup, and cockpit graphics at the touch of a button.
Power comes from the APP290 electric drive system, paired with a 52 kWh net NMC battery. The ID. Polo GTI offers a WLTP range of up to 424 km and supports DC fast charging at up to 105 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 24 minutes.
In terms of design, the ID. Polo GTI keeps classic GTI elements such as the red front stripe, honeycomb air intake, sporty stance, 19-inch alloy wheels, roof spoiler, black rear diffuser, and GTI badging. Inside, it combines modern digital displays with a retro-inspired cockpit mode that references the original Golf GTI.
The electric GTI also offers improved practicality, with more interior space than the combustion-engine Polo GTI and a larger luggage capacity of 441 litres, expandable to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded. Optional features include a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, massage front seats, premium Bridgestone sports tyres, and advanced driver assistance systems such as Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition.
Overall, the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI marks a major step in transforming the GTI performance legacy into a new electric compact sports car.
