Cummins, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR choose Marshall County, Mississippi, for their joint venture's advanced battery cell plant, aiming to create over 2,000 jobs and commence production in 2027, with a focus on lithium-iron-phosphate technology for electric trucks.
Date: January 19, 2024Columbus- Accelera by Cummins., the zero-emissions business arm of Cummins Inc, PACCAR, and Daimler Trucks & Buses US Holding LLC have chosen Marshall County, Mississippi, as the future location for their advanced battery cell manufacturing plant for the Accelera™ joint venture. This joint venture, announced in September 2023, aims to localize battery cell production for commercial electric vehicles, generating over 2,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs, with potential for expansion. The 21-gigawatt hour (GWh) factory is scheduled to commence battery cell production in 2027.
Accelera, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR will jointly own and control 90% of the business, focusing on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology for commercial battery-electric trucks. EVE Energy, a global leader in LFP battery cell manufacturing, will contribute its expertise with 10% ownership.
Jennifer Rumsey, Cummins Chair and CEO expressed enthusiasm for advancing their Destination Zero strategy, emphasizing economic growth and job creation in Mississippi. John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, highlighted the importance of localized battery cell production in providing cost-effective options for fleets to decarbonize operations. Preston Feight CEO of PACCAR looks forward to expanding their partnership with Mississippi, emphasizing the industry-leading zero-emissions solutions the battery cell factory will provide.
The collaboration aims to lead the commercial vehicle sector's transition to zero-emissions technologies, aligning with the Paris Climate Agreement's goals. The transaction is pending customary closing conditions, regulatory approvals, and submission of a voluntary notice to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
