Hanover, Germany- Continental AG., has expanded its Generation 5 Hybrid tire range for regional freight transport with the launch of the new Conti Hybrid HT 5 trailer tire. With this addition, fleets can now run a technically matched solution across steering, drive, and trailer axles, built for distribution duties that combine city stop-and-go, highway running, and occasional short on-/off-road use.
Mr. Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development for Bus and Truck Tires at Continental, said, the HT 5 was developed specifically for the high daily demands of regional transport, including frequent braking, tight maneuvering, cornering, and changing load conditions. The tire is positioned to deliver a balance of safety, efficiency, and durability for reliable and economical operations in varying route conditions.
Compared to its predecessor, the Conti Hybrid HT 3+, Continental states the HT 5 achieves around 15% higher mileage, helping reduce replacement frequency and trailer tire costs. For a fleet operating 80 trailers at an average of 110,000 km per trailer per year, this could mean savings of about 32 trailer tires annually, along with reduced effort in tire changes, warehousing, and procurement.
Continental also highlights optimized rolling resistance to support fuel-efficient operation and lower fleet costs. The company notes that tires can account for up to 53% of commercial vehicle fleet operating costs, making efficiency gains meaningful. Longer tire life also supports sustainability by reducing raw material consumption and lowering CO₂ emissions across the tire value chain.
In terms of performance, Continental emphasizes improved grip on wet and cold roads, supported by a newly developed tread compound and a comprehensively optimized tread pattern. This is reflected in an EU tire label wet-grip rating of “B,” while an “A” rating for external rolling noise indicates the tire meets the highest category for low noise emissions, contributing to reduced noise pollution.
The new tread design uses zigzag-shaped center grooves and precisely engineered 2D pocket sipes to maintain reliable traction even as tread depth decreases. Continental says the optimized tread stiffness supports even pressure distribution, helping deliver stable and easily controllable braking performance, particularly in wet conditions.
With the HT 5 introduced, Continental’s Hybrid family for regional applications now includes the Conti Hybrid HS 5 for steering axles, focused on precise tracking and driving comfort, and the Conti Hybrid HD 5 for drive axles, designed for strong traction and balanced braking. The new HT 5 completes the set for trailer axles, offering high running stability, robust construction, and dependable grip under varying load conditions.
Continental adds that the optimized casing construction of the Generation 5 Hybrid tires is designed to enable high-quality retreading over multiple life cycles. All tires in the Hybrid family are also equipped with RFID, and they are available ex works as smart tires with pre-installed sensors for integration into the ContiConnect digital tire management system.
The Conti Hybrid HT 5 trailer tire will be available from March in sizes 385/65 R22.5 and 385/55 R22.5, with more key sizes planned to be added to the portfolio by 2027.
