Chennai- Ashok Leyland limited., of the Hinduja Group Limited.,  a commercial vehicle manufacturers, has announced the groundbreaking of a new greenfield battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai. The move further strengthens the company’s commitment to supporting India’s growing electric mobility ecosystem.

The project will involve an investment of around Rs. 400–500 crore and forms part of the broader investment plans of the Hinduja Group under a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2025. The upcoming facility is aligned with Tamil Nadu’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage, and India’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

The foundation plaque for the new facility was unveiled by Thiru M.K. Stalin, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The ceremony was also attended by Thiru T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, along with senior officials from Guidance Tamil Nadu, representatives of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, and other distinguished guests.

The battery pack manufacturing plant at Pillaipakkam marks an important milestone in the development of a stronger EV ecosystem in India. The facility is expected to support the localization of EV battery pack production, strengthen the domestic electric mobility supply chain, and generate new employment and skill development opportunities in Tamil Nadu. It also reinforces the state’s status as a major hub for advanced automotive manufacturing and EV innovation.

Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said, “Our journey has been closely linked with the growth of Tamil Nadu for over seven decades. Ashok Leyland, along with its subsidiary Switch Mobility, has already developed a wide range of electric commercial vehicles and established a strong position in the EV market. The groundbreaking of this new battery pack manufacturing facility is a significant step in our electric mobility journey and reaffirms our commitment to building a strong domestic EV ecosystem.”

Mr. Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, added, “Battery pack technology is at the core of the future of electric mobility and energy storage. This facility will help us develop advanced battery pack solutions with greater efficiency, safety, and reliability, while also supporting localization of the battery supply chain. It will further contribute to building specialized talent and creating new opportunities in high-technology manufacturing in Tamil Nadu.”
