Chennai- Ashok Leyland Limited., of the Hinduja Group Limited., has announced the reintroduction of its iconic truck nameplates TAURUS and HIPPO. Reintroduced for the current market, TAURUS strengthens the company’s high-horsepower tipper range, while HIPPO forms the core of its heavy-duty tractor portfolio. The revival of these established brands reflects Ashok Leyland’s focus on combining proven durability and reliability with modern technology to meet the requirements of India’s evolving infrastructure sector.

The new TAURUS and HIPPO were unveiled by Mr. Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland, in the presence of Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, President – MHCV, and Ms. Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head, along with key customers, dealers, and members of the media. Designed to deliver higher productivity, improved uptime, superior fuel efficiency, and enhanced driver comfort, the new range is engineered to offer better lifecycle economics and higher profitability for fleet operators. Built on Ashok Leyland’s advanced AVTR modular truck platform, TAURUS and HIPPO provide enhanced flexibility through multiple configurations and feature options, and will be available for bookings and deliveries across Ashok Leyland dealerships nationwide.

HIPPO’s highly successful run from the 1980s to the early 2000s established it as the definitive heavy hauler of its time, known for its heavy-duty aggregates, power, and exceptional sturdiness. For fleet owners, the name evokes memories of a dependable workhorse that consistently delivered under the toughest conditions. TAURUS, on the other hand, created history as India’s first multi-axle truck, setting the benchmark for heavy-duty operations nationwide. Its ability to perform reliably in challenging environments made it the preferred choice for high-load applications, and even today, multi-axle tippers are commonly referred to as “TAURUS,” underscoring the nameplate’s lasting impact on the industry.

The all-new TAURUS and HIPPO are powered by an 8.0-litre A-Series 6-cylinder engine delivering 360 HP and best-in-class torque of 1,600 Nm over a wide rpm range. Built on reinforced chassis with heavy-duty drivetrains and superior stability, these vehicles ensure exceptional durability and enhanced driving comfort, even in the most demanding applications. TAURUS is engineered for large-scale infrastructure projects and challenging mining terrains, while HIPPO is designed for heavy-duty haulage applications such as bulk commodities, industrial raw materials, and ODC transportation.

With improved cabin comfort, enhanced drivetrain durability, and faster turnaround times, the new TAURUS and HIPPO deliver superior pulling power, operational efficiency, and lifecycle economics that modern fleet operators demand. Backed by decades of engineering expertise and a strong nationwide service and sales network, Ashok Leyland continues to strengthen its leadership position in the Indian commercial vehicle industry. Through the reintroduction of TAURUS and HIPPO, the company reaffirms its commitment to customer-centric innovation and sets new standards in the high-horsepower MHCV segment.

Mr. Shenu Agarwal, said that TAURUS and HIPPO are purpose-built for the heavy-duty requirements of mining, infrastructure, and construction applications. He highlighted that the new range is powered by Ashok Leyland’s A-Series 6-cylinder engines, delivering industry-leading torque and power, and offering unmatched durability, reliability, and productivity, along with faster turnaround times for customers.

Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, added that TAURUS and HIPPO are more than just product names, describing them as legends that earned the trust of generations of Indian transporters. He noted that tippers and tractors are among the fastest-growing segments in the MHCV industry and play a critical role in India’s infrastructure growth. Operating in harsh terrains and extreme conditions, these vehicles demand superior reliability, robustness, and driver comfort. The new TAURUS and HIPPO, he said, combine legendary ruggedness with cutting-edge technology, significantly improving ease of operation, reducing driver fatigue, enhancing component life, and delivering higher uptime and better profitability for customers.
