London, United Kingdom- BAE Systems plc., a heavy-duty electric propulsion, will supply 42 of its advanced Gen3 electric drive systems to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for its new fleet of hybrid-electric buses. These systems will be integrated into the vehicles by bus manufacturer New Flyer, helping the city reduce fuel consumption and emissions through reliable, cost-effective technology.

SFMTA has relied on BAE Systems’ electric drive technology since 2007, showcasing a strong and consistent partnership. The new Gen3 system builds on that legacy with next-generation features, including silicon carbide (SiC) components and a compact, lightweight design that boosts electrical efficiency. With nearly 30 years of continuous innovation behind it, the Gen3 system is engineered to support SFMTA’s commitment to a cleaner, more efficient public transit system.

Mr. Bob Lamanna, vice president and general manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems, said, “BAE Systems’ Gen3 system will help the SFMTA achieve its goals by providing dependable, zero-emission capable technology. “Hybrid buses equipped with our technology will deliver immediate benefits, such as reducing emissions and improving air quality, while advancing San Francisco toward a zero-emission transit system.”

BAE Systems’ Gen3 electric drive system will power 42 new hybrid-electric buses for San Francisco’s Muni, offering a cleaner, smarter transit solution. The system includes a traction motor, onboard energy storage, and smart power electronics in a streamlined design with fewer components for increased reliability and easier maintenance while ensuring a smooth, quiet ride.

Featuring engine start-stop and geofencing capabilities, the hybrid system enables zero-emission operation in designated zones without the need for external charging. With nearly 30 years of experience and over 19,000 systems in service globally, BAE Systems continues to lead in sustainable transit technology.
